EYFS 2024 > Safety and suitability of premises, environment and equipment > Accident or injury > 3.62; 3.63
It is our policy to keep children safe when they are in our care. We will take every reasonable measure to protect your child from hurting themselves.
Our nursery has been checked to meet the requirements of the EYFS in England. We regularly review, update and practice safety routines, including evacuation drills.
All our teachers have a valid pediatric first-aid certificate. We can administer basic first-aid treatment, and our first-aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible. It is inside the wall mounted first-aid cabinet in the dining area.
We have an arrangement with another nursery to provide emergency back-up cover if necessary.
In the first instance, we will reassure the injured child whilst ensuring the safety of the other children in our care. This may involve securing a baby in a pushchair, or placing an older child in a safe but visible location (e.g., seated in the living room)
Where possible, we will tend to any injury. If further assistance is required, we will contact the emergency services, or dial 112 via a mobile phone. This will automatically indicate our location through GPS services
In the event that a staff member needs to accompany or take a child to hospital, other children in our care will either accompany that staff member, or remain with another caregiver at the premises. Alternatively, emergency back-up cover will be called in. This will be another registered childcare provider or known responsible adult
In an accident or emergency situation, our back-up cover may contact you and you will be expected to collect your child straight away.
If we manage to deal with the accident ourselves, then we will tell the affected child’s parents immediately.
If we must accompany or take a child to hospital, we will contact their parents and ask them to meet us at the hospital.
If a member of staff is involved in an accident, the nearest responsible adult will be called upon for assistance whilst arranging back-up cover as necessary.
We will do our best at all times to make sure the children in our care are safe, reassured and kept calm.
All accidents and incidents will be recorded in the online accident and incident log. This is electronically sent to each parent by email for their record and confirmation of the accident or incident.
In the event of a serious accident illness or injury, or death of a child whilst in our care, we will notify Ofsted and Harrow Safeguarding Children Board.
We will also notify our public liability insurance company if we have to seek emergency treatment for a child.
It is not possible to totally eliminate accidents and emergencies. To minimise this, we have a risk assessment carried out on our premises and outside space. Fire risk assessments are also carried out periodically. These are reviewed regularly and parents can inspect them if requested. We have a number of other policies and procedures in place including a Risk Assessment Policy. This covers in more detail the risk assessments we perform to help minimise accidents.
Evacuation drills are practised once a month and a record of this is available for parents to inspect. The first aid cabinet contains a list of all parent contact details in case we need to contact them in the event of a medical emergency. All parents’ emergency contact details are also kept on the business mobile phone.
We also have a policy on what to do if a child is missing (for example during an outing) or if a parent fails to collect a child (e.g., as a result of being involved in a serious accident).

No child wants to fall off a jungle gym or slide. Accidents are an unfortunate fact of life, but to lower every last slide and jungle gym to a height that would only interest a toddler is doing our children a grave disservice - Darell Hammond
Moments in the park
Outdoor play is very important part of our daily routine. And we go to very interesting parks and open places.
We take the task of nourishing children’s minds and bodies very seriously and ensure that their diet at the daycare is healthy and well balanced.
