Evacuation

In the event of an emergency (fire, flood, gas leak, environmental emergency, structural damage, intruder or other threat), the safety of children on our premises is paramount.

Procedure (how we will put the policy into practice)

On discovering an emergency, we will:

• Ring the emergency bell three times so that all children and other occupants gathers in the porch area
• Take a mental register to ensure everyone is accounted for
• Begin evacuation by the safest exit (we not go out of our way to collect personal belongings)
• Inform the appropriate emergency service
• If safe to do so, turn off the gas and electricity from the outside main points
• Not to re-enter the house until instructed by the emergency services officer

Evacuation exits

If an evacuation is needed, we will use the following exits:

• The front door and assemble in front garden of 46 Sefton Avenue (opposite the nursery)
• If we are not able to use the front door, we will use the back door and assemble at the bottom of the garden
• If both exits are blocked, we will use the front window to make our exit. All emergency contact numbers for each child is held on the phone (parent’s contact numbers, doctor etc).

All emergency contact numbers for each child are held on the phone (parent’s contact numbers, doctor etc.). Other emergency numbers of our own doctor, police station, emergency responsible person to mind children are also listed on the phone.

There is also a fully charged mobile phone with the same numbers near the front door of the premises.

Practice of the evacuation plan

In order to keep the evacuation plan fresh in everyone’s mind, we will do the following once a month:

• Practice an emergency drill just like they do in school. Pretend a disaster is happening and go through the motions
• Practice escaping from both the front and back exits
• Test smoke detectors
