British Values

Requirement:

EYFS 2024 > Concerns about children’s safety and welfare > 3.7

The Prevent Duty Guidance defines British values as “democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs”. In our nursery we instill these values in children under our care in all the activities we undertake.

This policy should read alongside our Child Protection Policy.

Procedure (how we put the policy into practice)

We promote British values in the setting by demonstrating them through the way we act, and by promoting them through the activities and daily tasks that we perform across the seven areas of learning and development.

Democracy

Tthrough day-to-day activities such as:

• Involving children in decision-making; for example, when developing a menu plan or when deciding where to sit down for a picnic in the park
• Ensuring children take-turns, for example when washing their hands before lunch
• Using child questionnaires to gain and act on feedback received from children to show we have listened and responded positively to their ideas for improvement

Rule of law

Through day-to-day activities such as:

• involving children in developing our golden rules
• helping children to understand the difference between right and wrong

Individual liberty

We define this as “the liberty of an individual to do his or her will freely except for those restraints imposed by law to safeguard the physical, moral, political, and economic welfare of others”). We promote individual liberty  through day-to-day activities such as:

• giving children choices in what they eat, particular games they play and to what extent they want to be part of the group on that particular day
• activities such as a nature hunt and collage activity in which children make a collage from whatever they find
• telling stories such as fairy tales and other stories that include characters who don’t have individual liberty

Mutual respect

For those with different faiths and cultural heritage, we will promote activities such as:

• taking children on visits to different places of worship
• reading stories based on different communities and organise puppet shows
• using emotions to help children to understand and discuss different people’s emotions
